At Ball Green Primary School, our whole school reading scheme is ‘Bug Club.’

The rationale for selecting this scheme over other available programmes was driven by:

  1. Its evidence base in encouraging reluctant readers to read at home, with a net gain of 30 months reading progress in 18 just months;
  2. Its on-line reading world which increased the text capacity of the school from 400 hard-copy books to 47 200 e-readers that could be accessed in school, at home, or anywhere in the world.

The on-line reading world provides trackable, embedded activities in every eBook and for every completed task, children are rewarded with coins and prizes that can be used within the online world.  The inside cover notes of every book, – hard-copy and e-reader – offer help and advice to parents to go beyond the shared, sight-reading of the text with suggested activities and strategies to deepen understanding when reading with their child.
