Art and Design

“Every artist was first an amateur” [Ralph Waldo Emerson]

At Ball Green Primary School our vison is for Art and Design is to be an inspiring, engaging and challenging subject for all children. Art, craft and design embody the highest form of human creativity and with this in mind, we aim to develop children to explore their ideas and record their experiences, to think critically and cultivate a rigorous understanding of art and design.

Our vision is that children will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. They will also develop an appreciation of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Through the implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum, every child has the opportunity to deepen and develop their thinking. It allows children to become proficient in drawing, painting and sculpture as well as other art, craft and design techniques including printing, collage and photography. Children experiment with their ideas, their use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. In order to deepen this knowledge a set of desired skills have been formulated to ensure that all learning is purposeful and progressive.

The curriculum enables children to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. Children will evaluate and analyse their creative works using the subject specific vocabulary they have been exposed to. In addition to this, children will learn about great artists, craft makers and designers as well as developing an understanding of the historical and cultural development surrounding them.

The impact of this rich curriculum along with the opportunities for self-expression, is that children will achieve a self-sense of artistic skill and a range of techniques that they can independently talk about. Explaining and evaluating why they prefer one technique over another, or why a particular artist chose specific techniques. Children will also have an understanding about a range of diverse artists who have helped to shape the world of art throughout history. Finally, children will be able to talk critically about works of art, both those of famous artist and their own artwork.
